To C Alex Iafallo TWF 79 - 2.0M UFA 2022 (25) LW Tanner Pearson TWF 82 - 3.75M UFA 2021 (26) LD Dion Phaneuf TWD 80 - 7.0M UFA 2021 (34) LD Jacob Moverare TWD 61 - 0.690M RFA 2020 (20) LAK 2021 2nd cap: 12.75M To RW James Neal PWF 84 - 5.0M UFA 2020 (31) RD Travis Hamonic DFD 82 - 3.86M UFA 2020 (28) RD Michael Stone TWD 80 - 3.5M UFA 2020 (29) cap: 12.36M LAK is a competitive team looking to take the next step w/weakness on RD. CGY is in complete turnover mode and move pending UFAs they will not be re-signing while receiving players they can utilize properly. Phaneuf and Stone are washes, but the point is Phaneuf gets to retire a Flame while carrying a hit that CGY can use to their advantage next season while playing rookies w/low hits. Cap hits are relatively equal. CGY & LAK Accept Break Down
Pearson + Phaneuf + 2nd = Neal + Stone Iafallo + Moverare = Hamonic

I don't like this deal for Calgary. No matter what Calgary should be getting an extra bonus for taking on Phaneuf's contract. Even then, this deal still looks bad for them.

Think you're over analyzing it. While what you're saying makes some sense, no teams have shown interest in any CGY players (other than Brodie) and this move sees them receive players 26> (minus Phaneuf) & a future 2nd that can be flipped or used to draft. These pending UFAs would just be walking away from CGY w/no return, instead they receive organizational needs. Phaneuf is a liability no matter how you see it, but giving CGY the depth players they need moving forward makes them the winners here, while LAK gets the pieces they've been searching for on their block.
