have placed LD Ryan McDonagh TWD 85 (35) - 6.75M UFA 2026 - NTC - [TBL Retains 1.25M 2024-2026. 5.5M hit] on waivers for the purpose of buyout.

I realize it gets dicey with the retainment, but I'm over cap, and moves need to happen.

If someone takes him, no worries. I'm just not sure if the buyout retainment will be based on his full cap hit & TBL is off the hook for retainment or if it's off the reduced cap hit & TBL still has to pay the $1.25M til 2026.

Either way works for me.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that TBL retention would be reduced to 25% of their retention, just like McDonagh salary w/EDM

So EDM hit would be 1.375M -> 2026

& TBL retention would be reduced to 0.313M -> 2026

Minnesota Wild GM /Player Rep , Is there any kind of league rule for buyouts & waivers related to retention. If there is not, would something like this help clarify things,

If a player with salary retention is sent to the minors, The team that is retaining salary must pay full amount.

If a player with salary retention is bought out, the team that is retaining salary will only have 25% of the amount they are retaining count against the cap.

Sending guys to minors and bringing them back up doesn't need to be announced and could potentially cause cap problems for the team retaining. It could cause them to go over the cap.
