QUESTION: Where & what does Alex Pietrangelo sign? My prediction: Doug Armstrong makes some crazy moves to free up cap in STL and signs AP to 9.0M x 8 deal (same as Josi)
.....I want to be wrong though

Either the Blues figure their cap out by moving players like Bozak and Allen or they lose Piets.
If Piets goes to FA I can fully see him going to Toronto. Dubas would make the cap space if he could get him.

I think you’re right. He’ll probably re-sign in STL. But I could see Toronto or Montreal finding a way to sign him

I think there's too many ties to both St. Louis and Toronto for him to go anywhere else if either team is able to have him. St. Louis is where his wife is from but Toronto is where his family is from and Tavares was a close friend of his growing up. I can see him fully being on board with trying to get win a cup for Toronto if St. Louis isn't able to resign him and Leafs were able to make the cap space for him (which is easy btw).

IN any other offseason, he could resign or be signed anywhere for 9M. However, due to the cap remaining frozen for the next two seasons (I think, I know I'll be wrong), he may sign a cheaper contract in either STL or TOR.

I could see multiple ways of going about it. The good thing with Toronto is he'd have many ways of earning money outside of just playing hockey.

8 x 8 in STL, or 8.75 x 7 somewhere else. I think he most likely stays in STL, but MTL and WPG are possibilities. I think the Toronto rumours are just Toronto media and fans doing what they always do, and fantasizing about every big free agent signing there for a paycut "cuz Toronto"
I could see him bring a really good fit in Buffalo or Ottawa as both have a bunch of cap space, really good young lefty defensemen, and a hole on the right side, but no way does he sign in either of those dumpster fire franchises.

Leafs can sign him for 8.75M x 7 lol. Dubas is one of the best when it comes managing the cap, he can get it done if that's what it takes will still keeping his core intact.

Not sure that Marner/Matthews contracts agree. Couple others where there's overpayment. Don't think he's gotten a single "steal"

Don't think he's gotten a single "steal" I think Marner is the only overpayment and I'd rather pay a star player an extra 2M than a bottom 6 player. Nylander's contract is solid, Kapanen and Johnsson everybody was saying wouldn't sign for less than 4.5M-5M and Dubas got them for below 3.5M. Not to mention, signing players like Spezza and Ennis to league min deals are much better uses for the cap than signing guys like Matt Martin at 2.5M. 2.25M spent on the 4th line is a much better use of the cap than spending 7.5M... just saying. Dubas can has set himself up perfectly to be able to move Johnsson, Engvall, Kerfoot, Dermott (needs a contract), etc for cap space if he wants to sign Piets. Then can replace those guys from within or for guys from FA that are looking to show they still have it (Spezza, Ennis, etc etc).

Those are pretty wishful thinking statements.
The Leafs haven't been out of the first round for the past few seasons because of the poor cap management. Looking at this season, their depth was shot and they had to play a guy like Marincin on D and had almost no secondary scoring from anyone because they couldn't afford to upgrade their role players.
Would you rather overpay on a guy like Marner and have zero depth afterwards? Even if they move out the contracts they do, they are going to sign overwashed vets for league min deals? Or unproven overseas Russians? Doesn't sound like a recipe for success.

They got screwed with injuries all year (defence is already bad and having Rielly and Muzzin out at periods of time was a huge roadblock). Their offensive depth was not the problem and they have multiple guys that can step into roster positions. Not to mention, Spezza was a huge addition this season as was Mikheyev until his injury.
