The Olympian, from Hemel Hempstead, has ended 108 years without a British medal in this event at the Olympics.
He said: 'My coach and I Scott [Hann] have been working so hard over the past four years.
We stepped out of London 2012 and I wanted to prove myself as an all-rounder and I've done that. I feel I've completed that target now.

In a close-run final, the Olympian ended up in third place while fellow Team GB competitor Nile Wilson finished in eight
'Kohei [Uchimura] has been my idol for a long time so I'm very proud for him and Oleg [Verniaiev], I've been competing with him for years.
He's been producing huge scores in the last few years and I'm very honoured to come third to those two.
'That Team GB have won more medals today makes it even better. We are very strong, we're such a big team, and hopefully we can go back to the village and everyone be proud of our achievements today.'
He received a final score of 90.641 in tonight's competition.
Fellow Team GB competitor Nile Wilson finished in eight place.

He is Britain's first male world gymnastics champion and helped lead the London 2012 Olympics team to bronze - the first British men's team to win an Olympic medal in 100 years.
The team suffered an agonising disappointment on Monday when they were edged into fourth place in the team final.
Nevertheless, Whitlock urged his teammates to move past the defeat and focus on their individual finals.
'It's disappointing - we knew we had the potential to be right up there and we did our best,' said Whitlock after the event.

'It wasn't the best we could ever do, and some of the scores were lower than we usually get, but that's the way sport it.
'We've got to look forward to the finals now and forget about it.
Obviously it makes you want to go back and produce some big results and it is about going out there and doing the job.'
As well as the pommel, Whitlock had strong medal chances in the all-round - at 8pm tonight - and on the floor.

'He planned a weekend away, which is not like him, and we got on the train and he wouldn't tell me anything about it - so I did wonder what was going on!' said Leah, women's head coach at South Essex Gymnastics Club.
'It was a beautiful place and we went for a walk around the grounds and he laid down a picnic blanket and asked me.
It was very romantic and I can't believe how well he planned it.

'We had spoken about getting married before and I knew he wanted to, but I never had any idea when he might ask.
'He said after he had been really nervous - even more than when he has to speak on live television.
'But it was all lovely and now I feel so lucky to be engaged to the most perfect guy.'

The pair are something of a 'royal couple' at South Essex Gymnastics Club, where they met and grew up training together.
Leah is also an accomplished gymnast, recently representing Britain at the European Union of Gymnasts training camp in Italy.
And their success is already inspiring the next generation of gymnasts.
'My gym has a year-and-a-half waiting list, the youngest member is two years old, and we train right alongside them so hopefully we're inspiring the next generation in the most direct way,' said Whitlock.
